Brexit has had a negative effect on the City but there is much worse to come, according to Gina Miller, leader of the True and Fair Party.
In a Fireside Chat with FT Adviser Miller discussed the effects Brexit has had on financial services and the economy, as well as her motivations for wanting to get into politics.
She said: “During Covid a lot of the fine details that were supposed to come in from Brexit were put to one side and we treaded water for a while but they are going to start coming in now.
“This will mean we are going to start seeing a much more declining situation in the City and across our economy than we have seen so far.”
Miller said the outlook was “bleak” with the next government inheriting the “worst economic situation since the 1950s”.
“In my view, we need to re-align with some of the EU directives and policies that were put in place because the EU is running ahead of us in so many ways,” she added.
Miller warned the UK in the 2030s would see changes happening at a “significant rate” and the next government needed to be stable in order to weather those changes.
She said: “Change will come from AI, an ageing population, instability from around the world, with some analysts saying we are already in a pre-war era and of course climate change.
“Therefore, we need to fundamentally rethink our economic model hence why I am campaigning for a wellbeing economy. Which means transforming our current model and putting a health lens across almost everything.”
